Blombos Cave Ochre

This morning in the New York Times I read about the archeological discoveries in  a cave at the tip of South Africa of an ancient paint factory or studio of men who lived 100,000 years ago!  Ancient abalone shells  full of  ochre "paint" were unearthed. Even the fingerprints of a person who stirred the mixture are preserved there. What an amazing find and proof that symbolic thinking  is older than previously thought!

I have some abalone shells in a box that I collected from the beaches around Hermanus when I visited my mother.  I have an idea to go look for them and paint a still life as  a tribute !
